US-backed forces take 60 villages from Islamic State in Raqqa

RAQQA – The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Tuesday declared that it had taken control of 60 villages in the countryside of the Islamic State stronghold Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor.

Speaking to Ara News, a spokesperson from the SDF, a group comprised of Kurdish, Arab, Turkmen and Assyrian fighters, said that several villages were taken from the IS group.

The spokesperson also added that 172 IS militants were killed in US airstrikes while eight were captured alive.

“The operation targeting IS strongholds was successful, more than 60 villages are liberated,” he said, adding “we destroyed IS bases in the region while killing or injuring many jihadists.”

Large amounts of ammunition and arms were also taken by SDF forces, depleting IS supplies, Ara News reported.
