I am pleased to extend my warmest greetings to the Canadian Kurdish community Centre of Toronto as you celebrate Newroz, the Kurdish New Year.
Since the time of Ancient Mesopotamia and the Persian Empire, the vernal equinox has symbolized renewal. Today, millions of people around the world observe the New Year with festive gatherings of family and friends and a sense of hope and optimism for the year ahead.
Translated as “New Day,” the festival of Newroz highlights not only a wealth of ancient traditions and customs that have survived thousands of years, but also the enduring contributions made by our Kurdish communities to Canada’s multicultural fabric. As you celebrate with loved ones around the Haft-Seen table, I hope that the New Year brings happiness, peace and prosperity.
On behalf of the Government of Canada and my family, I extend our best wishes for a joyful Newroz.
The Rt. Hon. Justin P.J. Trudeau, P.C., M.P.
Prime Minister of Canada
