Pro-Kurdish candidates gear up for Turkey’s vote

ERBIL, Kurdistan (Rudaw) – The pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) stressed a message of peace at an event to present the party’s 550 candidates in Turkey’s upcoming general election.

“We will conduct an election campaign completely based on humanitarian and friendly relations,” Salahaddin Demirtas, co-chair of the party, said at the event in Ankara on Friday.

The HDP will participate in the Turkish general parliamentary election for the first time as a party this year, instead of putting forward independent candidates.

Turkey is split into 85 electoral districts with HDP being present in 81 districts for the 2015 election. Turkish parliament has a total of 550 seats.

According to Supreme Electoral Council of Turkey, at least 32 parties have met the criteria to field candidates in the general election.
